Shukr bil-qalb

Sadid Quraishi

The root word "shukr" (شكر) and its derivatives appear 75 times in the Quran**, emphasizing gratitude to Allah and others. Forms like "shakir" (grateful) and "shakur" (most grateful) highlight its significance. Gratitude in Islam is expressed on three levels: Shukr b'l-qalb – Felt in the heart. Shukr bi'l-lisan – Expressed in words. Shukr bil-badan wal-arkan – Shown through actions. Thanks, Shukria, Shukran for reading my writing! My words come straight from the heart(Shukr bil-qalb).

As I discussed earlier, as of 2023, the global Muslim population is around 1.9 billion, making up 24% of the world's population. With over 3.6 million mosques worldwide, approximately 187 million Jumma sermons are delivered each year. These sermons are not just weekly gatherings—they are the largest, greatest, and widest network in the world, a powerful tool to educate, guide, and unite the Muslim community.

Nowadays, many khateebs and Imams mention Gaza, Palestine, Kashmir, Yemen, and Pakistan in a few lines. I urge them to dedicate 10-15 minutes to explain the problems, atrocities, war updates, and truths—without bias. They can also discuss elections, taxes, and education without endorsing political stances, ensuring the community stays informed and aware.

You recently delivered a remarkable khutba on Surah Shura at ISCJ. For my readers, could you explain the meaning of the word Shura and its core principles?
